Plakias

Plakias is a coastal tourist settlement, but also a beach, of the Community of Sellia of the Municipality of Agios Vassiliou in the regional unit of Rethymno in southern Crete. The village seems to have been inhabited since ancient times, as there may have been an ancient city there.

History
The area has been inhabited since ancient times. In the place of Plakias it is considered by some that the ancient city of Lamon or the ancient city of Phenicia of Lampaion was located. In Plakias objects from the Roman era have been found, while in the Zoodochos Pigi site a necropolis of 5 acres has been identified, but the tombstones have been removed. Scattered slabs have been found on the slope and according to one hypothesis, the large number of slabs gave the name Plakias to the area. However, as Kostis Il. Papadakis notes in his “Toponymy”, the settlement owes its name to the large underwater plates that extend all the way out on land and are clearly visible below the surface of the sea.

According to another hypothesis, the name comes from the fact that the village was built on a large slab.

The beach of Plakias is 35 km from the city of Rethymnon and is located in South Crete. It is sandy and well organized. In the village you will also find many shops and taverns.
